     Kurtis “Kurt” James Mayer, age 79, Waite Park, MN died Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at his home in Waite Park.
     Per Kurt’s wishes private family services were held. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart/Arban Cemetery, Holdingford, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Kurt was born June 15, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN to Urbin and Josephine (Matter) Mayer. He grew up in lower Northeast Minneapolis where he attended Edison High School. In 1960 Kurt joined the United States Navy. He did tours in the North Atlantic and Cuban Blockade. Kurt returned to Minnesota in 1964 and worked as a caisson pipe welder, construction laborer and cement finisher. He attended the University of Minnesota as a part time student.
     Kurt received a bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State University in 1974 and did master’s studies at St. Thomas University. He started a business consultant company that provided business planning, administration, finance and marketing services to minority construction companies. In 1979 he joined Short Elliott Hendrickson, a professional engineering firm, and soon became a principal. Kurt served as Director of Business Development and Marketing. He retired in 2010 after nearly 35 years with professional service firms.
     Kurt enjoyed hunting, fishing, biking, hiking and camping. He had a deep appreciation of nature and the majesty of the physical environment. Kurt loved to travel, visiting many Hawaiian Islands and Alaska. He visited most of the United States and many foreign countries and several Caribbean Islands. Kurt especially enjoyed Vietnam, his beloved wife’s home country.
     He gave to numerous charitable organizations supporting women and children, including Shriners Hospital for Children; veterans organizations including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Kurt supported groups that really made a difference in people’s lives.
     Survivors include his loving wife Nhung K. Mayer of Waite Park, MN; son Todd (Cindy) Mayer of Sartell, MN; grandson, Alex Mayer of Sartell, MN; brother Loren Mayer of St. Paul, MN; and sister Marcia Smith of Anoka, MN.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Urbin Mayer, and sisters, Diane Puhalla and Pamela Babin.
