William “Bill” Enoch Haroldson, age 89, Sauk Centre, MN, died Sunday, March 18, 2012 at St. Michael’s Hospital, Sauk Centre, MN of pulmonary disease.
A private family graveside service was held at Bill’s request at Greenwood Cemetery, Sauk Centre, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Bill was born November 1, 1922 in the Lindstrom, Center City, MN area to Frank and Christina (Jacobsen) Haroldson He attended a country school, Furaby, then on the the Lindstrom, Center City High School where his favorite subjects were history, social studies, band, industrial arts and shop. Bill lettered in extemporaneous declamation, band, and wrestling, where he went to state competition. He also attended night college in Minneapolis, taking courses in psychology and management. Bill quipped-”they studied me there too”. After graduating in 1941, Bill went to California and worked for Northrup Aviation, until his mother notified him that his brother was missing in action and later died at a Japanese Prison Camp. Bill then quit his job and enlisted in the United States Army Engineers, where he served from 1943 to 1946. He took his basic training at Engineer Replacement Training Center Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Further training in motor repair, and operation of all heavy equipment (specializing in road grader and motorized air compression for blasting) at Fort Crook, Nebraska. Bill served in the Asiatic South Pacific Area at New Guinea, then to Leytee, Philippines to join the Unit 27th Engineer Construction Battalion. They then went to Luzon, Philippines where they made a landing at Subic Bay, where they worked on roads, bridges and landing strips. Bill then went with his Battalion Occupational duty in Japan to clean up from the massive air attacks by the United States.
Bill worked for the Minnesota Department of Corrections Home School from 1968 to 1980, where he worked with troubled youth. In 1971 he started Haroldson Mobile Park in Sauk Centre, MN. Bill also was a hobby farmer and enjoyed raising animals. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Sauk Centre, Sauk Centre American Legion Post #67 and Sauk Centre VFW Post #2853.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene Haroldson of Sauk Centre, MN; sons and daughter, William “Bill” Haroldson, Jr. of Aitkin, MN; Richard “Rick” (Cindy) Haroldson of Sauk Centre, MN; Debbie Haroldson of Garrison, MN; two grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Franklin and Kenneth, and six sisters, Violet, Julie, Emma, Mable, Betty and Deloris.
Bill always said he and his great teammate, Arlene, always talked about how they were blessed with their immediate family, parents, siblings, relatives on both sides, neighbors and great communities where they lived, with good schools and churches of all denominations. In short he believed like Abe Lincoln said, “We have been blessed by the choicest bounties of Heaven, and lest we forget, we are only servants in His vineyard and all that we have is His alone.”
