     Karen Anne Petre, age 74 of Waite Park, MN died Monday, August 1, 2011 of ALS at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, St. Cloud, MN.
     Memorial services will be held Friday, August 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
     Karen was born July 7, 1937 in Silver Creek Township, Wright County, MN to Harry M. and Anna M. (Wild) Swanberg. She married Donald C. Petre on June 15, 1963 in Norfolk, VA. Karen received her RN Degree from Abbott Hospital, Minneapolis, MN. During her life Karen was employed as a nurse at Abbott Hospital, Minneapolis, MN and Martinson Clinic of Wayzata, MN; served in the United States Navy at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA; and for Drs. Charleton and Mayo of the Medical Clinic in Virginia Beach, VA. She also worked as court reporter for Huber Court Reporting of St. Cloud, MN and as a medical and x-ray transcriptionist in Denton, TX and Tucson, AZ. She was a member of St. Cloud VFW Post 428, VFW Auxiliary, and the Shriners Hospital Auxiliary. Karen enjoyed bowling, knitting, needlepoint and crafts.
     Survivors include stepchildren, Donald (Lilee) Petre, Jr. of Algonac, MI, Douglas (Peggy) Petre of Myrtle Grove, FL, Lauren Petre of Warrington, FL, Nancy Petre Rodriguez of Warrington, FL, sisters, Dorothy Swanberg of St. Cloud, MN, Helen Poole of Virginia Beach, VA, Florence Golden of St. Cloud, MN, Joyce Hollenkamp of St. Cloud, MN; five step grandchildren, Daniel, Whitney, Lauren, Rachael and Andrew, and many nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Donald on July 18, 1999, two brothers, Donald and Gordon Swanberg, and two sisters, Marian Hanson and Eileen Nelson.
     The family would like to thank the staff of Building 49-1 at the VA Medical Center for the care they provided for Karen.
     Memorials are preferred to the ALS Association or the Shriners Hospital.
