     Donald E. Holycross, age 90, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at Talahi Care Center, St. Cloud, MN.
     Funeral services will be Friday, July 1, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
     Donald was born October 6, 1920 in Grand Rapids, MN to Charles and Sadie (Snodgrass) Holycross. In 1940 he married Mae Sather in Big Fork, MN. In 2004, Donald married Mary Shekleton. He served overseas with the 16th Armored Division of the 3rd Army and later with Military Government in Germany during WWII.
     Don earned degrees from Bemidji State and the University of Minnesota and took additional work at St. Cloud State and Stanford Universities. He taught science and mathematics in his early career in education and later served in administrative positions in Marshall, Hibbing, and later as Assistant Superintendent in St. Cloud. Don retired in 1979 after 30 years in education.
     Don was a member of First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud, life member of Minnesota and National Education Associations, St. Cloud VFW Post #428, Waite Park American Legion Post #428, and maintained membership in the Retired Educators Association.
     Survivors include his wife, Mary Holycross of Waite Park, MN; son, Robert (Patricia) Holycross of Cohasset, MN; daughter, Cheryl (Thomas) Neutzling of Cameron Park, CA; four grandchildren, Kimberly, Dustin, Erik and Brett; six great grandchildren; step children, James (Mindy) Shekleton of Akron, OH; Deb (Kelly) Henry of St. Augusta, MN; Sandy (Larry) Bloch of Sartell, MN; six step grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mae, brother, Scott Holycross, and sister, Josephine Peters.
     Memorials are preferred to Heartland Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.
