John Ernest Kuehne, age 89, Waite Park, MN, died Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Bruce Timm will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, January 13, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Springbrook Cemetery, Swanville, MN.
John was born July 10, 1921 in Long Prairie, MN to Hugo and Martha (Dehn) Kuehne. He served in the United States Army as a machine gunner in the 30th Division (Old Hickory), 119th infantry regiment during World War II. John was part of the 2nd day landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. He was wounded twice and was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. On May 12, 1946, John was united in marriage to Margaret L. Stapel in Swanville, MN. John worked at the St. Cloud Veterans Hospital for 32 years until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waite Park American Legion Post #428; Disabled American Veterans, a life member of Sauk Rapids VFW Post #6992, and a life member of the Sauk Rapids Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margaret of Waite Park, MN; son and daughters, Joanne (Edwin) Lundgren of Mahtomedi, MN; Rev. Steven (Susan) Kuehne of Faribault, MN; Connie (Barry) Nordby of Wyoming, MN; Patricia (Carl) Heine of Warrenville, IL; and Terry (Gerald) Grinde of Hutchinson, MN; 22 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; sister, Lenora Ciaccio of Rockford, IL; brother, Marcus (Mildred) Kuehne of Detroit Lakes, MN; and sisters-in-law, Irene Kuehne of Melrose, MN; and Vera Kuehne of Grey Eagle, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 13 brothers and sisters.
Memorials to Prince of Peace Lutheran School are preferred.
