     Dale William Peterson, age 79, St. Cloud, MN, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community, St. Cloud, MN.
     Funeral services will be Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 12:00 Noon at First United Methodist Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Saturday, January 1, 2011 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday. Burial will be in North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN.
     Dale was born November 5, 1931 in Minneapolis, MN to Edward and Jessie (Henderson) Peterson. He married Patricia Jensen on January 16, 1954 in Minneapolis, MN. They separated after 25 years and then remarried on July 17, 1982 in Munsinger Gardens, St. Cloud, MN.
     Dale graduated from Macalester College and did his graduate work and received his Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota. He was a Fullbright Scholar. Dale was a professor of history at St. Cloud State University for 28 years, retiring in 1994. He served as Director of Latin American Studies Program in Costa Rica on three separate occasions. Dale was a member of First United Methodist Church where he participated in the church choir. He was also a former member of the Minnesota Center Chorale. His many interests included reading, travel and genealogy. Dale was also known for his sense of humor, honesty and kindness. He encouraged education and diversity and was passionate about his family and students, world affairs and justice.
     Survivors include his wife, Patricia Jensen of St. Cloud, MN; children, Toni Lorien of Santa Barbara, CA; Jeffrey Peterson of Santa Barbara, CA; Traci (Julie Grant) Peterson of Pueblo West, CO; James (Tony Smith) Peterson of Denver, CO; adopted daughter, Terri Kelly of Champlin, MN; brother, Donald (Bobbie) Peterson of Nashville, TN; granddaughter, Meghan Peterson; and numerous extended family and friends.
     He was preceded in death by his parents.
     In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First United Methodist Church or CARE.
     The family would like to thank the St. Benedict’s Senior Center Staff, with a special thank you to the 4th Floor Staff, for the special love and care they provided for Dale.
