Wilbur J. Meiners, age 78, St. Cloud, MN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Talahi Care Center, St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Dee Pederson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial with full military honors will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Wilbur was born August 6, 1932 in Pueblo, CO to Jess and Ina (Thompson) Meiners. He married Lois Bratschi on October 15, 1955 in Minneapolis, MN. Wilbur served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954. He retired as Chief Petty Officer after serving 33 years in the US Naval Reserves. Wilbur graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1962 as an Occupational Therapist. During his time at the University of Minnesota, Wilbur was a member of the Marching Band and was the Golden Gopher Mascot in the Rose Bowl in 1960 and 1961. Wilbur was employed by the Veterans Administration and spent the last 20 years of his career at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center, retiring in 1988. In 1991 Wilbur graduated from St. Cloud State University with a major in Art History. He was a member of Central Minnesota Arts Board, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, North Star Masonic Lodge #23 AF & AM, St. Cloud Eastside VFW Post #4847, NERA, and also served as a Boy Scout Leader.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Meiners of St. Cloud, MN; children, Carol Luce of Savage, MN; Matthew (Vicki) Meiners of Woodstock, IL; Aileen (Michael) Murphy of Newton, MA; and Eric Meiners of Eden Prairie, MN; sisters, Maralyn (Edward) Dettmann of Kingston, RI; and Cleo (Vernon) Lampos of Oaklawn, IL; nine grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials are preferred to National Parkinson Foundation or Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
