     Dr. Gerald “Jerry” J. Korte, age 82, St. Cloud, MN, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at his home.
     Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 11:30 AM, St. Augustine Catholic Church. Fr. Anthony Oelrich will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Jerry was born April 29, 1928 in Freeport, MN to Bernard and Helen (Schwieters) Korte. He married Jane Raymond on November 26, 1953 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud, MN. He served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948. Jerry received his Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University in 1951 and Master of Science in 1955. He received his Doctorate in Art Education from the University of Kansas in 1969. Jerry taught in the public schools in Melrose, Cloquet, Ely (Community College), and South St. Paul before joining the faculty at the SCSU Thomas Gray Laboratory School. He became a full time member of the SCSU Art Department in 1964, where he taught until his retirement in 1986. In addition to teaching Elementary Education majors, Jerry taught Art Education methods for all levels, advised graduate students in Art Education, and taught watercolor.
     While Jerry distinguished himself as a professor of art education, he is better known to the general public for his painting skills and his prodigious watercolor workshop schedule. Jerry’s art works have garnered him many awards, appearances in group shows, juried shows, one-person shows, and Artist in Residence program, Isle Royale National Park. He was a signature member of the Midwest Watercolor Society serving as Board member from 1987 to 1995, Vice President/President elect, President; and President emeritus. Jerry has been a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Christ Church Newman Center and has also been an active community leader and public official for Haven Township in Sherburne County.
     Survivors include his wife, Jane Korte of St. Cloud, MN; sons, Russell Korte of Champaign, IL; David (Lisa) Korte of Silver Spring MD; Jeff (Lori) Korte of Minneapolis, MN; sisters, Bernice (Paul) Noll of Redland, CA; and Marlyn (Ed) Clarke of Green Valley, AZ; brother-in-law Wally Theisen of Waite Park, MN; and one grandson, Raymond Korte.
     He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy Theisen.
     Memorials are preferred to Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org) or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.
