     Joe P. Harris, age 71, Rice, MN died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Sterling Park Health Care Center, Waite Park, MN.
     Funeral services will be Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 30, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will be in Green Oaks Cemetery, Baton Rouge, LA.
     Joe was born on October 31, 1938 in Jackson, LA to Stanley and Nanie Mae (Wixon) Harris. He was a world class pole vaulter, winning the NCAA National Championship in 1961 as a member of the LSU track team. Joe also won a gold medal in the US Military Games in 1963 while serving in the US Army. He married Ressa E. Stottlemyer on July 4, 1978 at Highland Park United Methodist Church, on the campus of Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. Joe was employed as a carpenter in Texas and Oregon before moving to St. Cloud in 1993. He was then employed by X-Cel Optical and Spectrum Optical in St. Cloud, MN. Joe was a volunteered for RSVP at Lincoln Elementary School and YMCA of St. Cloud, MN. He was a member of First United Church, Little Falls, MN.
     Survivors include his wife, Ressa Harris of Rice, MN; daughters, Jill Root of Baton Rouge, LA; Amanda (Doug) Elliott of Plano TX and 3 grandsons, Cullen, Carson and Michael.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother and 5 sisters.
     Memorials are preferred to Lewy body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org)
