Donald “Minnow” Hagen, age 83, St. Cloud, MN died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Country Manor Health Care Center, Sartell, MN.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
Donald “Minnow” Hagen was born June 15, 1926 in Starbuck, MN to Adolph and Marie (Holden) Hagen. He graduated from Starbuck High School in 1944. Minnow entered the United States Army in August of 1944 and served in the European Theater in Germany. During that time he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Minnow married Margaret I. Saltness on December 8, 1948 in Fessenden, North Dakota. Upon returning to Starbuck, Minnow and his brother Marv owned and operated the Starbuck Bakery. He was a Boy Scout Troop Leader, member of the Lions Club and served on the Starbuck Volunteer Fire Department. Later Minnow went to work for the United States Post Office in Starbuck until transferring to St. Cloud in 1972, where he worked until he retired in 1986. After his retirement, Minnow volunteered with RSVP and worked at the Whitney Senior Center Wood Shop, until his next retirement in 2009. He was busy making bowls, wooden toys and other items for family and friends. He always enjoyed bringing smiles to the faces of those who were recipients of his handiwork. Minnow was a member of the Eagles Aerie No. 622, serving as Treasurer for over 20 years. He was an avid sports fan enjoying the Twins, Vikings and Gopher teams. Minnow enjoyed spending time at the lake fishing and taking rides in the pontoon with family and friends, where peanuts were always a necessity.
Survivors include his children, Donald “Snuffy” (Vicki) Hagen of Cottage Grove, WI; Darla Hagen of Buffalo, MN; two grandsons, Capt. Jon Hagen and Kyle Hagen and one sister, Eloise (Jim) Totushek of St. Cloud, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margaret Hagen on February 18, 2000, and two brothers, Marv and Norm Hagen.
In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to honor Minnow at a later date.
