Stephen John McCaffrey died unexpectedly at St. Cloud Hospital on February 7, 2010, of cardiac complications. Those who were blessed to have known Steve will remember him for his joyful heart, good-natured personality and generous spirit.
Funeral services will be Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Community Church, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Matthew Molesky will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 10, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN.
Steve was born on September 24, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Fabian and Linnea (Laaveg) McCaffrey. He graduated from Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in Minneapolis and the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. On December 28, 1979, Steve was united in marriage to Terri Martin. He was a physical therapist, most recently working in hospice and home care at St. Cloud Hospital. Steve cared deeply for his patients, treating each one with his own special blend of humor and compassion.
Steve was a lifelong sailor who loved being on the water, whether it was a lake in Minnesota or a bay in the Caribbean. His other interests included attending St. Cloud State hockey games, adding to his wine collection, going on bike trips, spending time at the cabin, and being with family and friends.
Above all, Steve was a committed Christian. He delighted in reading scripture and being part of Bible studies, and he strove to live a Christ-filled life. In 1990, he and his wife founded the Pregnancy Resource Center in St. Cloud, a non-profit organization that helps women in crisis pregnancies. Steve attended Calvary Community Church in St. Cloud.
He is survived by his wife, Terri McCaffrey, sons, Joshua (Molly) McCaffrey and Paul McCaffrey; daughter Sarah (John) Ritchie; and two grandchildren, Sophia and Oliver. He is also survived by two brothers, Thomas (Kathy) McCaffrey and James (Judy) McCaffrey; and three sisters, Karen (Craig) Canham, Patty (Jeffrey) Bilcik and Mary McCaffrey.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Fabian and Linnea McCaffrey.
Memorial gifts may be sent to Pregnancy Resource Center in St. Cloud.
Pallbearers will be Steve Avery, Owen Peterson, Greg Mayer, Thomas McCaffrey, James McCaffrey, Gaylord Martin, Leland Martin and Karl Anderson.
