Marjorie Moore, age 89, St. Cloud, left this life peacefully and entered into the next on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House, St. Augusta. She fought a 13 year courageous battle with cancer.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 11:00 AM, Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. Rev. Wayne Anderson and Rev. Kristen Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Private internment will be in the columbarium at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Cloud. Arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
Marjorie was born June 12, 1920 in Watertown, SD to Arthur and Nicoline (Huseth) Higgins. She graduated from Central High School in Aberdeen, SD and received a teaching degree from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN. Marjorie taught elementary school in Pipestone, MN for three years prior to pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She received her nursing degree from Methodist Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN, where she worked for a period of time following graduation.
On December 18 1945, she married Orville Morris Rotnem, MD. Together they had two children: Diane Louise Rotnem and Richard Alan Rotnem. Dr. Rotnem died an untimely death in a motor vehicle accident in July 1954, leaving Marjorie to raise two children as a single parent.
Marjorie worked as a public health nurse in Eau Claire, WI from 1955 to 1962, continuing postgraduate education in public health nursing at the University of Minnesota. In 1962, she was hired by St. Cloud School District 742 and served as Director of Health Services for 22 years. After retiring, her nursing career continued in other directions: Assisted Living nursing at Benedict Village, Parish Nursing at Salem Lutheran Church and health care advocacy.
On October 21, 1972, Marjorie married Ben Hawkins Moore, Professor of Physics, Astronomy and Earth Science at St. Cloud State University. They were blessed with a rich and loving companionship of 32 years until his sudden and unexpected death in South Padre, TX on November 7, 2003.
Marjorie has been an active member of Bethlehem and Salem Lutheran Churches, Sons of Norway, St. Cloud State University Faculty Wives, Delta Kappa Gamma, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, League of Women Voters, Minnesota Nurses Association, Central Minnesota Nurses Association and the North Side Hester Park Neighborhood Coalition. She served on numerous boards of civic organizations.
Survivors include children, Diane Rotnem (Clark Springgate) of St. Cloud formerly of New Haven, CT; John (Sandra) Moore of Eau Claire, WI and Port Isabel, TX; James Moore (Barbara Strassberg) of Chicago, IL; Robert (Gwen) Moore of Coon Rapids, MN; Donna Moore Habermeyer of Brookfield, WI; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Rotnem of Hopkins, MN; brother, Robert (Barbara) Higgins of Eden Prairie, MN; sister, Jeanette “Jan” Dahl of St. Cloud; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four nieces; and nine nephews.
