     James Albert Grunerud, age 92, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community, St. Cloud, MN.
     Memorial services will be Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Dr. Ed Morgan will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     James was born December 11, 1917 in Waseca, MN to Albert and Mina (Anderson) Grunerud and was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. He served his country in World War II with the First Armored Regiment (Royal Canadian Dragoons) from 1940 to 1945 in the United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, seeing action in all of the European Theater of Operations. In January 1946 he enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan from which he received B.A. and B.Ed. degrees. On May 1, 1946 James married Muriel Morton in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1950 they returned to Minnesota where James taught high school in Odessa, MN. During that time he received a M. A. degree from the University of Minnesota and then served as the principal in Odessa and also in Mapleton, MN. In 1956 James went to California and entered the University of California at Berkley where he worked as a research consultant in the Bureau of Field Studies and as a doctoral student. On the completion of his PhD
    degree, he returned to Minnesota in August of 1959 and taught at St. Cloud State University in Education Administration until his retirement in July 1983. During his time at St. Cloud State University, James established the Honors Program and directed it for a number of years. He also endowed three scholarships at SCSU for students in need of financial assistance. After his retirement James tutored high school and university students.
     James was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as a Deacon and was a member of Prime Timers. He was also a member of NEA, MEA, MASA, Phi Delta Kappa, SCSU Faculty Association and the Faculty Senate on which he served as president, Sons of Norway, and was a Legion of Honor member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club. James was active with the Boy Scouts and served on the Eagle Scout Board of Review.
     Muriel and James traveled widely in Europe, USA and Canada where they had many friends. His hobbies included reading, wood carving, oil painting, attending family reunions, genealogy and enjoying his grandsons.
     Survivors include his wife, Muriel Grunerud of St. Cloud, MN; son, Terry Grunerud of St. Cloud, MN; and two grandsons, Wyatt and Dane Grunerud.
     Memorials may be made to the Grunerud Scholarships at St. Cloud State University Foundation.
