Ralph L. Hartwig, age 81, St. Cloud, MN died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the St. Cloud Hospital
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Peace United Church of Christ, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Hal Spann will officiate. Visitation will be Monday, May 25, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. VFW Post # 428 prayer service will be at 6:00 PM Monday at the funeral home followed by the Eagles Aerie #622 prayer service at 6:30 PM . Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
Ralph was born February 23, 1928 in Norman County, MN to William and Clara (Wendling) Hartwig. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict. On February 19, 1955, Ralph married Phyllis A. Ross in Litchfield, MN. He was employed by the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Medical Center from 1957 to 1986. Ralph was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622, and a life time member of St. Cloud VFW Post # 428. He volunteered at the Salvation Army and the YMCA.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hartwig of St. Cloud, MN; sons and daughters, Allyn (Betsy) Hartwig of Yelm, WA; Ross Hartwig of St. Cloud, MN; Becky (Brian) Nieland of St. Cloud, MN; Patti (Tony) Fisher of Watkins, MN; sister, Joyce Haag of Eden Valley, MN; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Brian, on May 16, 1976, one sister and four brothers.
Memorials are preferred to Peace United Church of Christ.
Pallbearers will be Alvin Hartwig, Vernon Haag, Dan Haag, Richard Haag, John Warren, Mike Warren, and Steve Hilary.
