Wava Laura Smith, age 90, died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Talahi Care Center, St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Aitkin, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Wava was born March 30, 1917 in Milbank, SD to Erwin and Elsa (Fenner) Schwantes. She married Howard E. Smith on October 12, 1939 in Brainerd, MN. After high school Wava attended the University of Minnesota and business school. She returned to the University in her mid years and graduated with a degree in Family Social Science. In the 1960’s Wava worked for Social Services of Crow Wing County teaching homemaking skills. During the period Howard served in the Minnesota State Legislature, she served as Vice President of the Rotunda Club and President of the Dome Club. Wava was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a marvelous wife, mother and homemaker. Wava loved to sew, cook, garden and play bridge. She volunteered at the University hospitals and gave a lot of time to the Girl Scout program.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Smith of Sartell, MN; daughters, Victoria (Julian) Cooley of Brownsville, TX; Deborah (Anthony) Sorem of Salem, OR; sister, Evelyn LeNeau of St. Cloud, MN; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be Mick Benson, Gordon Snyder, Christopher Cooley, Andrew Sorem, Alan Sorem, Steve Fahey, and Anthony Sorem.
Memorials are preferred to First United Methodist Church or Anna Marie’s House.
