     Rev. Richard “Dick” Tetzloff, age 68, Hackensack, MN formerly of St. Cloud, MN died Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.
     A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sauk Rapids, MN. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 23, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A second memorial service will be held Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Walker, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church in Walker, MN on Thursday.
     Richard Tetzloff was born May 15, 1939 in Janesville, MN to Carl and Agnes (Boettcher) Tetzloff. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1957, Concordia College, St. Paul, MN in 1959 and St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN in 1961. He married Mary E. Carter on August 12, 1961 in Freeman, SD.
     In 1963 Richard graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, IL and was ordained a pastor in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Mankato, MN. From 1963 to 1967 he served as parish pastor of Grace Lutheran Church of King City, CA and Redeemer Lutheran Church of Atascadero, CA. Richard did his clinical training at Hastings State Hospital, MN, The University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN, Hazelden Treatment Center for Alcoholism, Center City, MN, and LSS of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN from 1967 to 1968. In 1968 he was appointed Protestant Chaplain at the St. Cloud Hospital where he served until 1988, during that time he developed the St. Cloud Hospital’s Chemical Dependency Treatment Program. Richard also was an adjunct professor at St. John’s Seminary, Collegeville, MN from 1969 to 1984.
     During his time in St. Cloud, Richard served on the Board of Directors of the St. Cloud Hospital Credit Union, the Good Shepherd Home Board of Directors, the Whitney Senior Center Advisory Board, and the St. Cloud United Way Board of Directors. He was elected to the school board of St. Cloud District 742, serving seven and one-half years. During the last two years of his term, Richard served as Chairman of the School Board.
     Richard was called to become Director of Specialized Pastoral Care and Clinical Education for the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in 1988. He served in that position until 1995 when he was appointed Executive Director, Lutheran Ministries Association, St. Louis, MO. During his tenure at the national church level Richard was influential in establishing standards and guidelines for ecclesiastical endorsement, establishing the Christus in Mundo Award, forming the ILCC, which has been influential in deepening relationships between ELCA and LCMS, and establishing the “Give Something Back” scholarship fund. Richard retired in 2001. From 2001 to 2003 he served as Interim Director of Chaplaincy, Pastoral Counseling, Clinical Education for the LCMS and from 2004 to 2005 served as interim pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Backus, MN. In 2005 Richard was commissioned to teach pastoral care in Sri Lanka.
     In February 2007 Richard was awarded the Christus In Mundo Award. This award is the highest honor granted by the Lutheran Church to persons serving in ministries of chaplaincy, pastoral counseling and clinical education. It recognizes both a high level of service and a significant and lasting contribution in the field of specialized pastoral care.
     Survivors include his wife, Mary Tetzloff of Hackensack, MN; sons, Mark (Kathryn) Tetzloff of Seattle, WA; David (Gwen Garrity) Tetzloff of Sauk Rapids, MN; brother Carl (Lois) Tetzloff of Eden Prairie, MN; and seven grandchildren, Morgan, Ryan, Brady (Jessica), Megan (Matthew) Frank, Erin, Riley, and Tyler.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Clifford Tetzloff and sister, Nathalie Manthe.
     Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran School of Walker, MN.
