     Elaine Lorraine Salk-Nelson, age 84, St. Cloud, MN, died Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Sauk Rapids, MN.
     Funeral services will be Monday, September 3, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Sunday, September 2, 2007 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday. Waite Park American Legion Post #428 Auxiliary prayer service will be at 6:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Benton County Cemetery, Sauk Rapids, MN.
     Elaine was born September 30, 1922 in Stevens Point, WI to George and Gertrude (Pennbecker) Miller. She graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1940. Elaine was employed by Herberger’s in the hosiery department for eight years. Elaine married Harold Robert Salk. Three children were born from this union, Beverly, Barbara and Robert. On Christmas Eve of 1953 the family was involved in a train accident that took the lives of Harold,
    3 1/2 year old Beverly and 4 month old Robert. Elaine was laid up with a broken neck for sometime. She later worked for Scheper’s Jewelry Store part time and did sewing and alterations for several years. In 1962 Elaine married Ernest Nelson. They had one child, James. They were divorced after one year. Elaine later bought and operated Dick’s Superette, “We’re Little, But We’re Mighty”, a neighborhood grocery store, for 31 years, retiring in 1995. She enjoyed the many people and watching the children grow up from near by schools, where she was known as the “Mother Hen of the West End”.
     Elaine was active in Roosevelt Elementary School activities and was president of the PTA. Elaine was also an active lifetime member of the Waite Park American Legion Post #428 Auxiliary and was the first East Stearns County Council President.
     Survivors include son, James (Dana) Nelson of St. Cloud, MN; daughter, Barbara Auer of Wylie, TX; brother, Robert Miller of Salt Lake City, UT; four grandchildren, Nicole Carver, Jodi Auer, Angela Fredericks, and Daniel Auer; and eleven great grandchildren, Brett, Brianna, Bailey, Samantha, Amanda, Triston, Trevor, Preston, Sheridan, Hailey, and Joshua.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harold Salk and children, Beverly and Robert on December 24,1953, and one sister, Irene Hedlund.
