     Charles Clifford Carlson, age 79, of Waite Park, MN, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at Sterling Park Health Care Center with his daughter at his side after a courageous battle with cancer.
     Funeral services will be Monday, July 9, 2007 at 10:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Sunday, July 8, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home followed by the Waite Park American Legion Post #428 prayer service at 6:30 PM. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
     Charles Carlson was born September 20, 1927 in Kennedy, MN (Kittson County) to Andrew and Ellen (Nordin) Carlson. He was the sixth of nine children. In 1944 Charles joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. He served on the USS Dupont and was discharge in July 1946. After serving in World War II, Charles spent 32 years of his career in foreign countries: Iceland, Greenland, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Thailand, and Vietnam. He married Chalong Kobutri on January 31, 1960 in Bangkok, Thailand. Charles brought his family to settle in Waite Park in 1972. He then returned to overseas construction where he spent eight years in Saudi Arabia. He retired to Waite Park with his wife, Chalong. Charles was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and Waite Park American Legion Post # 428.
     Charles was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with politics, international events, and history - especially regarding World War II. He also enjoyed western fiction novels. Charles was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was loved by all who knew him for his gentle ways and accepting attitude. Charles adored his children and grandchildren. His wife was the center of his universe, and he loved his country. Those who knew him, considered themselves blessed. The world has lost one of it’s best at his passing
     Survivors include his wife, Chalong Carlson of Waite Park, MN; daughters, Jean Carlson of Plymouth, MN; Lisa (Doug) Lindemann of Prior Lake, MN; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jack Lindemann; brothers and sisters, Clarence Carlson of Crookston, MN; Helain Ingeman of Grove City, MN; Phyllis Carlson of Anoka, MN; Barbara Carlson of Anoka, MN; Franklin Carlson of Hallock, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Donald, Allen and James.
     In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or the American Legion.
