     Jean E. Eckberg, loving wife, cherished friend, sister, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community Subacute Care.
     Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Katie Schneider-Bryan will officiate. Internment will be at North Star Cemetery. Friends may attend a visitation for Jean on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Vistiation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred to First United Methodist Church, St. Cloud, MN. Arrangements by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Jean was born on May 19, 1918 near the town of Aitkin, MN to Charles and Bessye (Phillips) Megarry. Jean attended Hamline University in St. Paul, MN in 1935, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work in 1939. While at Hamline, she met Carlton Robert Eckberg of Sauk Centre, MN. After Hamline, she attended the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, where she studied towards a Master’s Degree. With the outbreak of WWII, she discontinued her studies. Jean married Carlton Eckberg on January 28, 1942 at her mother’s home in Aitkin County. While Carlton served in the US Army during WWII, the couple was assigned to live in several US cities, with the majority of their time spent in Washington, DC. The couple returned to St. Paul, MN after war’s end to resume their careers and begin their family.
     Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church in St. Cloud, MN. She belonged to the St. Cloud Chapter of the PEO, the AAUW and many other service organizations. A lifelong volunteer, Jean also served with the Central Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross, where she assisted with duties as a military liaison for facilitating family emergency leaves of absence.
     Jean is survived by her son, James and daughter-in-law, Barbara of St. Cloud, MN; grandsons, Daniel, Jonathan, and Benjamin; her brothers and sister, Ronald Megarry of Atlanta, GA, Richard and Marybeth Megarry of St. Cloud, MN, and Patricia and George Petraborg of St. Cloud, MN. She is also survived by nieces, Karn, Anne and Kris; nephews, Dirk, Brent, Ross and Kevin; granddaughters, Erika and Lindsey; all of whom, she loved dearly.
     Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Carlton (1978); sons, John (1982) and Carlton Jr. (1951); parents, Bessye and Charles; and infant granddaughter, Janel (1980).
