Gaylord S. Olson

St. Cloud

December 13, 1934 - May 18, 2024

Gaylord Sherwood Olson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, at the age of 89.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM on July 12, 2024 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Cloud MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Urn placement will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Columbarium. Arrangements are with Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud.

Born on December 13, 1934, in Willmar, Minnesota, to Sigwall and Olga Olson, Gaylord grew up in a loving family with his siblings Geraldine, Sidney, and Cheryl. He graduated from Willmar High School in 1952 where he was active in sports and played trombone in the band. He went on to earn a BA in Business Management from the University of Minnesota in 1956.

Gaylord proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. It was during his time stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, that he met the love of his life, Patricia Sneva. The two were married on August 29, 1959, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together.

In 1959, Gaylord embarked on a successful career with Sundstrand Corporation (later Modine Manufacturing), taking him to Rockford, Illinois, Dowagiac, Michigan, and ultimately to Camdenton, Missouri, where he was promoted to Plant Manager in 1986. Throughout his career, Gaylord's dedication and leadership were evident, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and community members alike.

Gaylord was a devoted father who always encouraged his children to strive for excellence. His unwavering faith in God guided him throughout his life, and he was actively involved in his church and community. He held various leadership roles in numerous organizations, including the Lions Club, Salvation Army, Sons of Norway, Ducks Unlimited, and Boy Scouts of America.

Known for his friendly nature and infectious laughter, Gaylord had a knack for making friends and telling jokes. He had a deep love for history, travel-especially to Norway-reading, Minnesota sports teams and celebrating his Norwegian heritage. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting and fishing.

Gaylord leaves behind his beloved wife Patricia, his children Charlene (Mark) Garrett, Janet (Michael) Rousse, and Thomas (Kathryn Collins) Olson. He was a proud grandfather to Amanda, Jacque, Jennifer, and Harold, and a loving great-grandfather to twin great-granddaughters Mikayla and McKenzie. He is also survived by his sister Cheryl (Dean) Ramsay, and proud uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Geraldine (Earl) Rykken, his brother Sidney (Evelyn) Olson, and his son John (Jack) Olson.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Quiet Oaks Hospice House and CentraCare for their outstanding care and support. Gaylord's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Memorials are preferred to Quiet Oaks Hospice House, 5537 Galaxy Road, St. Cloud, MN 56301
