September 15, 1940 – July 31, 2023
Thomas (Tom) Peter Schreifels of St. Cloud, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, at the age of 82. After several months of declining health, Tom died peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife Linda and children.
Tom was born in St. Cloud on September 15, 1940, to Ray and Mary Ann Schreifels. Tom, the oldest of two sons, graduated from Cathedral High School and enlisted in the Navy at age 18. He served from 1958 to 1961 as a radio mechanic and was assigned to the USS Montrose for part of his service time. Tom was also in the Naval Reserves from 1961 to 1964.
Tom met and married the love of his life, Linda Heurung Schreifels, in 1962, making their home in St. Cloud. They had a son, Philip, and a daughter, Jennifer, whom he adored. During their childhood, Tom loved showing them how to build and repair endless items. Many days were also spent together fishing at area lakes, attending Cub Scouts led by Tom, and listening to the many stories he read.
Throughout this time, Tom worked in the construction industry, focused on painting and drywalling. Later in 1975, Tom was hired as a painter at the St. Cloud Hospital and Plaza Medical Center. He enjoyed working with staff until his retirement in 2007.
Tom was a man of many talents and hobbies. He was a gifted photographer, winning several photography contests. He also meticulously built a miniature replica of his son’s house, a log cabin, and a church by hand. These took hundreds of hours to build and are a marvel to enjoy. Tom also enjoyed growing roses as well as wood carving, drumming, and reading.
Family members will lay Tom to rest in a private ceremony at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life held on Sunday, August 20, from 1-4 pm at 9141 Andrie Court NW in Ramsey, MN.
Tom is survived by his wife, Linda Schreifels; his son Philip (Julia) Schreifels; his daughter Jennifer (Charles) Davis; his brother Steve (Glenda) Ellingson; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
