     Robert F. Freitag, age 82, St. Cloud, MN died Friday, February 10, 2006 at Sterling Park Care Center, Waite Park, MN.
     Funeral services will be Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, St.Cloud, MN. Rev. Charles Preble will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in the St. John’s Episcopal Church columbarium, St. Cloud, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Robert Freitag was born September 4, 1923 in Wabasso, MN to Robert and Sophia (Tjie) Freitag. He married Donna M. Paape on December 31, 1943 in Redwood Falls, MN. Robert drove truck for Redwood Falls Rendering Plant. In 1957 Robert worked as a psychiatric technician at the Willmar State Hospital. Robert then moved to Jamestown where he was employed as a Chemical Dependency Counselor at the Jamestown Hospital from 1963-1965. Robert then returned to the Willmar State Hospital where he was instrumental in working with the hospital director to develope the “Minnesota Plan”, which is a treatment plan now used nationwide to treat chemical dependent individuals. Following his time in Willmar, Robert and Donna then moved to Grand Forks where he worked at the Referral Counseling Center, as well as lecturing at the University of North Dakota to medical and nursing students on the effects of chemical dependency. Robert was employed as a counselor by the Mental Health Center from 1970 to 1984. From 1984 to 1989 he opened a private practice with his wife, Donna, where he continued his work and was often sought after for public speaking opportunities. In 1989 he worked independently through Psychotherapeutic Resources until his retirement in 1993.
     He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Robert was a former member of the St. Cloud Hospital Advisory Board from 1971-1986. A member of the Battered Women’s Shelter Board until 1986 and a member of the Peer Review Committee for the Institute for Chemical Dependency Professionals of Minnesota, Inc.
     Survivors include his wife, Donna Freitag of Big Lake, MN; daughter, Nancy Freitag of Big Lake, MN; and sister, Clarice Irene Perizzo of Redwood Falls, MN; many nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clarence Freitag.
