     Shirley Juliet Warman Birr, 98, died January 8, 2023 at Edgewood Assisted Living, Sartell, MN.
     Family and friends are invited to gather at Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, for tea/coffee, desserts and conversation. Books from Shirley’s home library will be there for those who wish to take them.
     A short interment service will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 4:00 PM at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre, MN.
     Shirley was born December 11, 1924 to Byron and Juliet (Adams) Warman. She was married to Raymond E. Birr on October 28, 1948 in the Sauk Centre, MN Methodist Church.
     Shirley graduated from St. Cloud State University with a B.S. and M.S. degrees and Kindergarten and Reading Specialist certification. She taught in rural schools, Sauk Centre Elementary School and was a professor at St. Cloud State University. At St. Cloud State University she was involved in developing the Open School Concept at the Laboratory School, taught in the Education Department and traveled nationally as a consultant in curriculum programs. Shirley published articles in educational journals and co-authored with Dr. Roger Rouch, Teaching Reading: A Practical Guide of Strategies and Activities.
     She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sauk Centre, MN, taught Sunday School and edited the church newsletter.
     Shirley is survived by her siblings, Michael (Dennis) Warman of Eden Prairie, MN; Nancy Roman of Napa, CA; and Jean (Al) Andrews of Victorville, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Juliet Warman, husband Raymond Birr, siblings, Phillip, Judith, Byron Jr., Keith, Julius, William and Jacqueline, and many nieces and nephews.
