Arlene Marie Towler, age 94, Sartell, MN, died Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, Sartell, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Arlene was born March 8, 1928 in Mankato, MN to Roy and Ella (Brooks) Davis. She spent all of her school years in Mankato, graduating from Mankato State Teachers College. Arlene taught school for a year. On August 25, 1951 she married James Towler. They moved to Madison, NJ where Jim attended Drew Theological Seminary. In 1955 they moved back to Minnesota serving in United Methodist Churches there and also in North and South Dakota.
In the churches Arlene was a pastor’s wife, but also a Sunday school teacher, trainer of teachers and youth leader. She was active in United Methodist Women in the church’s district and conference offices.
In various communities Arlene served as a den mother and Camp Fire leader. She taught and substituted in various public schools and started two art departments.
Arlene’s art specialty was hand quilting, she not only made many quilts but also taught and demonstrated quilting, and designed and made missional banners for church events. One of her quilts was published in a book, First Prize Quilts. She was founding president of South Dakota Quilters Guild.
Upon Jim’s retirement in 1994, they moved to St. Cloud, where they are members of the First United Methodist Church of the St. Cloud Region.
Arlene enjoyed bird watching, knitting, quilting, and camping with the family, including several canoe trips to the Boundary Waters.
Survivors include her husband, Jim of Sartell, MN; son, Dwight (Colleen) Towler of Dallas, TX; daughter, Karri Lin Cortlandt of Cloquet, MN; brother-in-law, Roger (Sue) Towler of Sauk Rapids, MN; sister-in-law Dorothy Towler of Rock Island, IL; ex sister-in-law, Annette Towler of Leesberg, VA; grandchildren, Alexander Towler, Ben (Andrea) Cortlandt, Jennie Cortlandt, and Katie (Nate) Paquette; great grandchildren, Maija and Emily Cortlandt, Lily, Willow, Ivy, Blossom and Coral Paquette; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law Luella and Robert Rose.
