     James Donald Leipold, age 96, St. Cloud, MN, died Monday, September 12, 2022 at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Medical Center.
     Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 30, 2022 at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     James was born May 27, 1926 in Willmar, MN to John and Werdena “Dena” (Christians) Leipold. He graduated from Willmar High School in 1944. Upon his early graduation James entered the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Theater until 1946. In 1950 James was called up to serve in the Korean Conflict, where he was taken prisoner and escaped to make it back to United States controlled territory (officially listed as MIA). James spent four days in the hospital and then returned to the 24th Division active duty. He served for a total of 18 months.
     James married Ruth M. Tepfer on October 17, 1948 in Willmar, MN. He was employed as a psychiatric technician in chemical dependency at the Willmar Regional Treatment Center. James was a life member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing.
     Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Salzer of Waite Park, MN; two grandchildren, Christa (Richard) Ruth and Aaron (Leah Stice) Salzer; and four great grandchildren, Jayden, Alexyss, Ronald, and Bowen.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth on December 24, 2016; four sisters, Margaret Sletten, Dorothy Harrison, Irene Berg and Gladys Johnson; and brothers, John Leipold and William Leipold.
