     Dr. Alvin H. Schelske, age 87, Leesburg, FL, died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
     Visitation will be at the Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud from 4 pm to 8pm on Saturday, February 4, 2006. A Memorial Service will be held in the Benson Funeral Home Chapel at 6:30 PM. Rev. Katie Schneider-Bryan, Rev. Ken Beck, and Rev. Evelyn Durkee will officiate. Private internment will be Monday, February 6th at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN.
     Alvin was born April 25, 1918 in Parkston, South Dakota to Henry H. and Helen (Hildebrand) Schelske. He graduated from Parkston High School, attended Rochester Junior College and graduated with a BA degree from Mankato State University. He received his Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Education from Columbia University, New York. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a pilot and instructor in Heavier than Air and Lighter than Air Aircraft and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He married Phyllis Baker on September 16, 1944 in Greenwood, Massachusetts.
     Alvin was principal of the Campus Lab School at Albion State College in Idaho and then at the Campus Lab School at St. Cloud State University. In 1965, he went to Africa with the Teachers for East Africa Program through Columbia University. While there, he taught at Makerere University ( Kampala, Uganda), the University of Nairobi (Kenya), and the University of Dar-es Salaam (Tanzania). Following his time in Africa, Alvin returned to St. Cloud State University where he was Assistant Dean of Education, served two years as Dean of the Graduate School and was acting Dean of the School of Education, retiring in 1980.
     During his lifetime, Alvin was a member of the Retired Military Officers Association, United States Tennis Association, American Legion, Elks Club, St. Cloud Country Club, and First United Methodist Church of St. Cloud, then Clermont, FL. He was active in the American Cancer Society and had been a survivor of two types of cancer. Alvin served as a Scout Master and also as a member of the Eagle Scouts Board of Review. He served as Post Commander of the Navy Reserve in St. Cloud.
     Among his many accomplishments, Alvin climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1968 and was one of the oldest people to climb Ayers Rock in Australia. He also participated in the National Senior Olympics in Baton Rogue, LA and won the Bronze Medal in Tennis Mixed Doubles.
     Alvin is survived by his wife, Phyllis Schelske of Leesburg, FL; sons, Paul W. Schelske/Patsy R. Schelske of St. Cloud, MN and David (Lori) Schelske of Cold Spring, MN; and daughter, Kristin (Vern) Moening of Maple Grove; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Sara, Anthony, Amanda, Ally, Abbey; and one great granddaughter, Lauren.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
     In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Dr. Alvin H. Schelske Parkston High School Scholarship Fund c/o Phyllis Schelske,1125 First Street S. Apt. 453, Sartell,MN 56377.
     Alvin felt there was no greater reward than to make a positive contribution to the lives of others. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
