Bruce A. Kerwin, age 63, of St. Cloud, formerly of Savage, MN, passed away unexpectedly on April 13, 2022 at his home in St. Cloud, MN. Although Bruce left this world too suddenly, the “mighty” will live on in all of our hearts.
Bruce was born in Two Harbors, MN, October 20, 1958. This small town boy, lived his 70’s dream by fishing, hunting agates on the shores of Lake Superior and playing in numerous garage bands and dipping his toe into what would be his passion, music. In 1977, Bruce graduated from Two Harbors High School and shortly thereafter left that small town world for the bright lights of the Twin Cities to find work.
Bruce, being the charmer that we all knew, and his fake it till you make it attitude, was able to lie his way into a job with a band, stating that he knew how to run sound. He knew enough to be dangerous. He could also carry and move gear, so with his charm and willingness to work, Bruce landed the job. His first nights behind the sound board were a little rough. Bruce ultimately figured things out and became a very skilled soundman. He ran sound for bands such as, The Babysitters, Dash Rip Rock, Fairchild, Heartbreaker and other bands that have escaped memory. During this time, while running sound and working with many bands, Bruce also did many jobs during the day to help pay the bills. Bruce was most proud in getting to meet and hang out with a few of the iconic song leaders such as Jimmie Jameson of Survivor, Fergie Frederickson of Toto, Mike Reno of Loverboy and Alex Ligertwood of Santana and others. Cooking and eating hot dogs with Jimmie Jameson was probably one of many highlights in Bruce’s life.
In 1985, Bruce met his ex-wife Karen and they married in 1987. They spent many years living life and enjoying their time together, as both were fearful to become parents. In 1999, they were blessed with their son, Shane. Bruce was so proud to be a dad, and he loved watching his son play baseball and was so proud of his son, and all of his son’s accomplishments. Looking at a little baby to raise, Karen not wishing to be a groupie forever, requested Bruce to get a job that was more of career. So Bruce went back to school at night while working a full time day job and ended up graduating with his Associates Degree as an Electronics Technician. He then got a job with Loften Label where he worked for the next 20+ years as an electronics technician. After 27 years of marriage, Karen and Bruce divorced but remained in contact.
In 2017, Bruce heard the call of that small town and moved back to Akeley, MN, then to Pequot Lakes, MN where he met his finance Drusilla (Dru) Dabbs on July 1, 2018. They had both found their “forevers” and were hoping to marry this late spring/summer. In January 2022, Dru and Bruce settled in St Cloud and were planning their wedding and their future home together.
Bruce is survived by his son, Shane Kerwin, ex-wife Karen Kerwin, fiancé Drusilla Dabbs, Mother, Glenna Merritt (Oleson), Brothers Thomas Kerwin, Jerry Kerwin (Kimberle), Donald Kerwin (Ruth), Robert Kerwin, mother-in-law to be Florence Dabbs, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many friends.
Bruce is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Louis & Lela Oleson, parental grandparents Thomas & Loretta Kerwin, Father Kenneth Kerwin, Step-Father Roger Merritt, infant brothers, Glenn Kerwin, Larry Kerwin & Gerald Kerwin.
Bruce’s celebration of life will be held, Saturday, May 28, 2022 at the residence of his son & Ex-wife, Shane and Karen Kerwin, 14542 Joppa Ave S, Savage, MN 55378. Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior at 3:30pm with a service to begin at 4:00pm. Visitation and stories of Bruce’s life to be told in the backyard after service with a lite meal. Later that evening, Heartbreaker, a band that Bruce worked with, will hold a special tribute show in honor of Bruce at 9:00pm at Neisen's Sports Bar & Grill, Savage, MN. Please join us for these events to honor a man who was loved by many and will be missed deeply.
