Shirley Jean Dickison, age 91, Waite Park, MN, died Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral Services will be Friday, May 7, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Sauk Centre, MN.
Shirley was born September 14, 1929 in Osakis, Mn to Fred and Alvina (Harms) Alm, the last of nine children. She was raised near Westport, MN where she attended two country schools and the graduated from Sauk Centre High School. Shirley was involved in school oration, singing contests and a 4-H Club. One of her fondest memories was being on a five-team majorette group during her four years of high school—performing at basketball and football games.
In 1947 she married Verlan Dickison in Sauk Centre. To this union ten children were born of which five are living. In 1957 they moved to Waite Park, MN. They later divorced. Shirley was employed at various cafes (which she loved) and in grocery and retail. Her favorite job was working at Dropp’s Unique Portrait Design, retiring in 2010.
Shirley loved working with children. She was a leader for Bluebirds, Campfire Girls, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Waite Park Jr. Auxiliary and Waite Park Girls Marching Unit. She started the Miss Waite Park Queen Pageant and was chairwoman for 25 years. Shirley was also a 41-year member of the Waite Park Spass-Tag Organization. During that time, she started German Night for Spass-Tag and was voted Grand Marshal of Spass-Tag in 1989. She also held many offices in the organization including president. Shirley was a member and washboard player of “The Granny Gal Band” which played for various schools and organizations. She was also a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, The Frisky Red Hatter’s of Waite Park, Eagles Club, Moose Club Auxiliary and Waite Park American Legion Auxiliary.
Shirley enjoyed playing dice games, casino trips, photo and stamp collecting, family reunions, cooking, new babies and collecting Elvis memorabilia.
Survivors include her children Marsha (Leon) Pietrzak of Sauk Rapids, MN; Grant (Donna) Dickison of Rochester, MN; Gwen (Tom) Snell of Cokato, MN; Janelle Philippi of St. Joseph, MN; and Jodi (Bob) Martins of Waite Park, MN; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband Verlan Dickison, twins Randy and Roxanne, daughter Jill, infant twins, great granddaughter Mirabelle, four brothers, four sisters, and longtime companion Patrick Terhaar.
