Ethel Haakenson was born October 16, 1917, in Rock County near Luverne, MN. She was the oldest of four children born to Norwegian immigrants Lars and Anna Haakenson. Her family lived on a farm until the depression hit, and they were forced to move into town. After high school, Ethel attended the Brady and Rogers Beauty School in Minneapolis. When Ethel took her state boards, she completed a perfect “marcel”; her examiner was so impressed, she asked Ethel to come to work for her in Mankato. Through a boarding-house romance, Ethel met Jack Grant Carlson. Ethel first was introduced to him when all the “men” from the Dahl House would join the “women” at Mrs. Maydays’ House for meals.
Ethel married Jack on July 13, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, IA. From 1941 to 1947, they lived in Maynard, MN, Glenwood, MN, Sioux Falls, SD, South Bend, IN, and Luverne, MN. After the war, Ethel and Jack made their residence in Glenwood, MN. Jack was employed as the high school principal from 1947 to 1965. Ethel was a stay-at-home source of strength in the lives of their six children. She also worked at Glenwear and was active in ladies’ aide, church functions, Eastern Star, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Faculty Wives.
Ethel and her family moved to St. Cloud, MN in 1965, where she continued being involved in the church and Eastern Star. In addition, she joined Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO), which she thoroughly enjoyed. She also worked for J. C. Penney’s and Fandel’s.
Ethel and Jack wintered in Texas and Florida after Jack retired from his position as principal at South Junior High School in 1980. Summers were spent lovingly at their cabin on Little Boy Lake. As Ethel and Jack treasured traveling, they also went on a Panama cruise and visited Nova Scotia, Germany, Norway, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, and Montana.
Ethel was in the business of life and her job always followed the upper path. She was a mother, a daughter, a sister, a sister-in-law, a cousin, an aunt, a grandmother, a great-grandmother and a friend. She took joy in her family, in the people she met, and in the ideas they shared with her. She was never too old to acquire the spelling and meaning of a new word or concept. She was a strong woman and an excellent role model for the people she touched in her life.
Survivors include her siblings Helmer “Haaky” Haakenson of Luverne, MN, Helen Probst of Oroville, CA; and Lorraine Eggiman of Sacramento, CA; her sons and daughters, Jack (Julianne) Carlson of Stitzer, WI; James (Kay) Carlson of Morris, MN; Mary (Dallas) Thompson of Glenwood, MN; Linda (Zachary Neece) Carlson of Gainesville, FL; Alice (Robert) McGee of St. Cloud, MN; Robert (Mary Lenox) Carlson of Cheney, WA; 11 very special grandchildren, and 12 wonderful great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, and her parents Lars and Anna.
The family appreciates all the love and care that Ethel received.
