William G. Garding,   Age 73
Visitation Location: None
Funeral Location: Private Family Service
William George Garding was born on July 4, 1946 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Edgar and Marie (Reller) Garding. He was the 4th child of a large family, growing up on a Century farm near Lake Henry. He graduated from Paynesville High School in 1964 and completed a degree in Biology at St. Cloud State University.
Bill loved to travel on motorcycle, in his car and on his bicycle. He loved to plan a road trip and spend however long it took to see different parts of the country. He once described his motorcycle trips across country as giving him the feeling of being free. He would often pitch his tent along a roadside and sleep under the stars. He enjoyed going to flea markets and was fascinated with anything that was old or had gears. He was the “gear head” mentor and the go to guy for brothers and friends who were stuck with a mechanical dilemma. He learned to play the fiddle (made by his father) and loved bluegrass music. He would play with siblings at family gatherings and for his personal enjoyment. He was a voracious reader and remembered so much of what he read and had a gift of explaining historical events with great accuracy. He had an amazing memory for dates and knew everyone’s birthday and their age including siblings, nieces and nephews and friends and their children.
Bill did construction and in later years worked with his brother John in a cabinetry shop in Litchfield. After retirement he started driving school bus for Rocori school system and so enjoyed the children he watched grow and change from year to year. He enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of the other bus drivers and his employer. Their friendship and support meant so much to Bill as well as the friendships that began many decades ago and followed him throughout his life. All were cherished by Bill.
What was most important to Bill was his family and those who grew to be family. He so enjoyed watching his nieces and nephews grow up and was quite the tease, which they all loved. He was so proud of each of them and whom they had become as adults. He was forever grateful for his second family and neighbors, the Kollmanns. Their friendship expands over 40 years and through those years they have been there for one another and especially during these last years. Words cannot express what their presence in Bill’s life has meant to us all. They always kept on eye out for Bill’s well-being, inviting Bill into their family without reservation and with great love. Their care for Bill especially as his health declined touched all our hearts and will always be remembered. Bill Garding, your gentle soul and big heart; your analytical mind and great sense of humor; and most especially your unconditional love for family and friends will be greatly missed.
Bill is survived by his siblings: Barbara Lofquist (Jim) of St. Augustine Florida; Diane Zwolensky (Don) of Minneapolis; John Garding of Kandiyohi; Gary Garding of St. Cloud; Nancy Miller (Dan Sikorski) of Lincoln Nebraska; Suzy Jagusch of Red Wing; Peter Garding of Paynesville; Paul Garding (Ann Wiberg) of St. Paul; Mary Laib (Pat) of New London; Joseph Garding (Barb) of Spicer; Lori Ronchak (Andy) of Eagen. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rita Garding of Paynesville and 24 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Mike, and infant sister Annette, his brother-in-law Brad Jagusch, and his sister-in-law Peggy Garding. A private gathering of family will be held at a date to be determined. As per Bill’s request there will be no funeral.
