Grayce Alvina Benson Kerr
May 16, 1920 – May 18, 2019
Just beginning her 100th year of living life to the fullest, Grayce Kerr could only say, “Wow, what a journey!” All who knew her would heartily agree.
Grayce Alvina Benson Kerr was born May 16, 1920, to Julia (Fredrickson) Benson and Harry E. Benson in Claremont, South Dakota. She graduated from St. Paul Central High in 1938. Grayce was a former member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Grayce lived in Florida for 45 years, where she was employed for 25 years as Information Specialist for Pinellas County Vocation, Technical and Adult Education.
Grayce loved all people and animals, plus dancing, singing, composing songs, writing poetry and blowing the bugle and beating the drums during carnival parades in the Montgomery Ward, Burlington Zephyr and Civil Air Patrol drum and bugle corps. She often played piano for Alzheimer’s patients.
In her later years, Grayce moved back to St. Paul, after her husband’s death in 1995. She especially loved her relatives and the annual Fredrickson Family Reunion. During summers she sailed the world on many cruises with her Rhode Island sister-in-law, Virgina Cicerchin.
Grayce moved to Guardian Angels Sr. Housing in 2010. In 2015, she was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her work with the Civil Air Patrol during World War II.
Grayce died on May 18th, 2019. She was preceded in death by husband Robert, son Bobby, parents Julia and Harry Benson, sisters Florence Stine, Elsie Bowlin, and brother Harry Benson.
She is survived by her son Gary Benson Kerr and many dear friends, including Kathy Hendren and Anita and Roy Wagner.
A Graveside Service honoring Grayce will be held at the Hector City Cemetery at 3:30 pm on Saturday, May 25th, at which time the cremated remains of Grayce and Robert will be buried in the Benson Family plot. Memorials are preferred to Swedlanda Lutheran Church.
Grayce Kerr had many close friends, near and far, who will miss her very much, and she leaves them all with a final word: “To all dear friends and relatives, one more thing I must say – Toss out your woes and troubles; why worry when you can pray?”
