     Margaret Mary Bruyns, age 103, of Sauk Rapids, MN died Friday, December 29, 2017 at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Sauk Rapids, MN.
     Funeral Services will be at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the chapel of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Sauk Rapids, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Margaret was born December 20, 1914 in Labuan, Malaysia to George and Edith (Aeria) McGuire. Margaret married Harold Bruyns on December 26, 1938. Margaret and Harold spent their lives in Singapore. Margaret worked as a switchboard operator and later switched careers to elementary school teacher, teaching English as a second language. She loved animals and raised everything from dogs and cats to mousedeer and flying foxes. She won many awards for her show cats and also her wide collection of orchids, she even has an orchid named after her (Dendrobium Margaret Bruyns.) In 1994, Margaret moved from Singapore to join her daughter Hedy Tripp and her family in St. Cloud, MN. Margaret was a devout Catholic, who spent much of her time in St. Cloud assisting the church and charities, as well as volunteering with organizations like the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program.)
    Survivors include sister Antoinette Nicholas of Malaysia; daughter, Ellen (Barry) James of Australia; daughter Hedy (Luke) Tripp of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren Shannara James of Australia, Ayesha James of Australia, Ruth (Derek) Sherman of Brooklyn, NY, Azania Tripp of Brooklyn, NY, Comrade Tripp of St. Cloud, MN; and great-grandson Dylan Sherman-Hughes of Brooklyn, NY.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Harold Bruyns.
     Margaret’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Trish and Sandy who were Margaret’s personal home care assistants for several years and all the staff on Moonlight Bay at Good Shepherd, as well as the team from St. Croix Hospice during her last days.
