Earl William Weisel, age 100, died Friday, November 3, 2017 at Ridgeview Place, Sauk Rapids, MN.
Graveside services will be Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Earl was born March 16, 1917 in Lowry, Pope County, MN to Henry G. and Julia (Dalen) Weisel. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1935. After graduation, in June 1935 he applied and was accepted into the Civilian Conservation Corps (C C C). He served in Companies 708 Bena, 3720 Cass Lake, and 2705 Mahnomen and received his discharge in Sept 1937. A veteran of World War II, Earl served in the US Army from 1942 to October 1945 with the Signal Corp as a high-speed radio operator. On the morning of November 8, 1942, Earl landed at Oran, Algeria as part of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. In 1943 he served in Sicily and in 1944 he was stationed in Rome. After the war Earl graduated from Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis and worked in the construction business. He then worked for the United States Postal Service in Minneapolis from 1951-1980 and retired with a Federal pension and health care. He later moved to Kimball, MN and then to St. Cloud in December of 2006. In December of 2015 he moved to his final residence at Ridgeview Place.
After the war Earl married Gwendolyn J. Mollers on October 26, 1945. He is survived by his two children Stephen Weisel of Brook Park, MN and Bonnie Weisel of Madison, WI; two grandsons Jason and Travis Maron; one granddaughter Brandee Lee Hiller (Tim); and 2 great grandchildren Gideon and Hazel Hiller. He was preceded in death by his parents, his 4-day old infant brother, and his cousin Inga Magdalene Dalen who was raised as his sister.
Earl enjoyed many hobbies and activities in his life. Until middle age he played baseball and fast pitch softball. He enjoyed taking up the guitar as an adult and studied for many years. He loved nature and being outdoors enjoying activities such as cross-country skiing, biking, hiking and fishing. He was an expert ballroom and square dancer and continued to square dance with the Beaux and Bells Square Dance club in St. Cloud until age 98. Throughout his life he was an amateur ham radio operator W0TBJ and N0XPJ.
He will be remembered by all who knew him as a wonderfully kind and considerate person, who treated everyone fairly, and was honest to a fault. The family extends their deepest thanks to his CentraCare medical team, the staff and caregivers at Ridgeview Place, and to the St. Croix Hospice team who kept him comfortable on his last days.
