Stanley John Hagberg was born on September 2, 1928 in Minneapolis Minnesota. On February 26th, 2017 “Grandpa” Stan passed on to the arms of his Heavenly Father at his winter home in Mesa, Arizona.

Stan was the oldest of Adrid and Clara (Miller) Hagberg’s children. The family lived in Buffalo Lake until 1942 when they moved out to the farm. Stan graduated from Buffalo Lake High School in 1946 and began living his dream of running the family farm.

At a church dinner in 1949, Stan met a pretty nursing student (who was home with her roommate), and life for the young farmer changed forever. Stan married Yvonne Canton on August 19, 1950 in Minneapolis. For 66 ½ years, Stan and Yvonne enjoyed life together firmly rooted in faith, family and fun. Stan served his country in the Navy from 1951-1953. While serving in the Navy, Stan and Yvonne’s daughters, Julie and Janet were born. Stan and Yvonne returned to the farm and lived there until moving to Waite Park Minnesota in 1999. They have made Mesa their winter home since 1994.

Stan believed in contributing to his church and community and actively served on various boards and councils and as a member of many organizations. In his retirement he enjoyed volunteering, including Camp Friendship, the Paramount Theatre, Banner Baywood Hospital, and the Lutheran Thrift Shop.

Stan’s passion was fishing and he called Alaska the most beautiful place on earth. His favorite fishing trips were to Highstone Lake in Canada but Sugar Lake crappie fishing or Lake Minnewaska pontoon rides provided much joy in his last years. Stan loved current events, politics, Wednesday lunch, coffee with his buddies and his card playing groups. He was smart, funny, well-read and interested in the world around him.

Stan and Yvonne loved to travel and visited Scandinavia, in addition to most states in the US and every corner of Minnesota. There was always someone to visit along the way, new friends to meet or a football game to attend. He loved sports, especially the Twins, the Gophers, the Montana State Bobcats or any team his grandchildren played on or coached.

Stan leaves behind his wife Yvonne, daughters Julie Swaggert (and special friend Dennis Hennessy) and Janet (Tom) Knoll; Grandchildren Nathan (Cathy) Sing and children Peyton, Anthony, Preston, Aleigha and Jenessa; Marc (Elizabeth) Sing and children Sienna, Audrie and Milania; Malinda O’Brien and children Elliana, Jayden and Blake, Kia (Brandon)Prell and children Kallen, Mira and Stanton, Brent(Angie) Swaggert and children Reese and Tora and Tyson (Katie Jo) Swaggert and children Archer and Aikin.

He is also survived by his sister Avis Walter, brothers Ralph (Ruby) and Arild (Betty) Hagberg, loving nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren Christopher (Nicole) Knoll and children Kendal, Avery and Winston; Samantha (Nicholas) Hemmesch and children Tyler, Emmitt and Oliver along with innumerable relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Adrid and Clara, an infant daughter, a brother Dale and brother-in-law Richard Walter.

Stan was a people person who valued faith, family and friends and believed making memories was better than accumulating “things”. His family adored him. He offered advice, wisdom, humor and strength and every day was a “highlight.” His grandchildren and great grandchildren had the privilege to share card games, fishing, squeezing oranges, sports, and “grandpa” stories with him. His love was unconditional and the term “Grandpa Stan” was used fondly by so many as he made new friends, young and old daily. His legacy is living each day, trusting God and looking to the future with great anticipation be it on earth or in heaven.
