Edward “Ed” “Eddie” Lawrence Rahe, age 93, St. Cloud, MN, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 23, 2015.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be on Saturday, January 9, 2016 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the St. Cloud VFW Post #428. A prayer service will be led by the St. Cloud VFW Post #428 and Waite Park American Legion Post #428 at 2:00 PM. Burial, with full military honors provided by St. Cloud VFW Post #428, will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Ed was born August 25, 1922 in St. Louis, MO to Edwin L and Esther (Rousslange) Rahe. In 1925 the family moved to Indianapolis, IN which Ed considered his home. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1940. After graduation Ed worked for General Electric in Fort Wayne, IN until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. Ed said he “learned all about the Army” in ROTC so he chose the Navy instead. After boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, IL he was sent to Millington, TN for Aviation Machinist School. Assignments included the Naval Air Station (NAS) as a troubleshooter for Sterman N25 trainers; the NAS at San Diego for Gunnery and Consolidated B24 Liberator School; a “plane captain” or crew chief on the modified Navy B24. He served in the Northwest Pacific with Patrol Bomb Squadron VPB-116 where he earned his combat air crew wings. Ed was then assigned to the Alameda NAS near Oakland until his honorable discharge in February 1946. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1946 to 1954. Ed was very proud of his service to his country.
After his service Ed moved back to Indianapolis where he worked as a sheet metal worker, carpenter, and bartender. In 1952 he married Marie Wood in Hendricks County, IN. They opened Beaver Lake Resort in May 1953 and kept it open seasonally until 1958 when they made Minnesota their permanent home keeping the resort open year-round. It was in business until it flooded in June 1983. In addition Ed also worked at Powder Ridge from the early 1960’s to the early 1980’s. He began bar tending at St. Cloud VFW Post #428 in 1984 until he retired in 2002. Ed was a life member of St. Cloud VFW Post #428 and served as Post Commander from1991 to1992. He was a member of the rifle squad, participated in Buddy Poppy Program for 22 years including 9 years as chairman, and many other Post activities throughout the years. Ed also held state and national positions. He enjoyed attending VFW conventions over the years. Ed was also a member of Indianapolis VFW Post #1587 serving as Post Commander from 1948 to 1949, Cooties P. T. #13 and Waite Park American Legion Post #428.
Ed enjoyed traveling, especially going “back home” to Indiana, and taking day trips with his daughters. He also enjoyed spending time at his daughter, Jackie’s land by Onamia. Over the years Ed met some celebrities such as Bob Hope in California, Johnny and June Carter Cash in Kimball, world class champion downhill skiers, and many Indy 500 race car drivers
Survivors include daughters, Jenny (Terry Angleton) Rahe of St. Cloud, MN; Jackie Rahe-Blais of St. Cloud, MN; two step-granddaughters and step-great-grandchildren in Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marie on March 11, 1997, brother, Kenneth “Moose” Rahe, son-in-law, Tim Blais and step daughter, Sue Wright.
