Norma Dickau,   Age 71
Funeral Time: Service at a later date

    Norma J. Dickau
    St. Joseph
    Age 71 (March 16, 1943 – February 20, 2015)
Norma was born in Albany, California to Vera R. (Van Zee) and Michael C. Fulks. She lived in Woodland California and went to Holy Rosary Elementary school. Her family moved to Ogden Utah where she attended elementary and junior high school before family the moved to El Paso Texas where she graduated from high school. She graduated with a BA in psychology from the University of Texas El Paso in 1964, got a Masters in Librarianship from the University Washington in 1965 and an Advanced Master’s Degree in Library Science from Florida State University in 1970.
Norma started working at the College of Saint Benedict in media in 1975. She moved to the library where she stayed for most of her years working at the reference desk until her retirement in 2006. Norma loved being a reference librarian. It combined her love of helping people and her natural curiosity. It was fitting that her personal motto was borrowed from Rudyard Kipling’s story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi “run and find out”. This spirit of curiosity and adventure came out in all aspects of her life. She co-led groups of CSB/SJU students to Central America, Australia and South Africa. She was an enthusiastic world traveler. She hoped to inspire others, young and old, to be curious and have adventures across the world as well as close to home.
There is no doubt that Norma will be most remembered for her humor, compassion and joy. She felt it was her mission to share these qualities. She co-led laughter yoga workshops. She volunteered to give hand and arm massages in an AIDS recovery home in South Africa. No matter how she felt or what was being done to her, she would always have a warm smile and a generous response to those working with her. Smiling was so important to her that if she found someone being glum she would try to get a smile out of them. The world was a brighter place for her being in it. We will miss her smile, her laugh and her positive attitude.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Bruce, her parents, Vera and Michael Fulks in Concord California, her daughter Jessica Dickau, her son-in-law Todd Wachendorf, granddaughter Zoey and her “adopted” daughter Monica Cofell and granddaughters Emiliana, Leela, and Maura in Saint Joseph Minnesota.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Saint Benedict’s Care Center, South Short Stay unit for their kind and gentle efforts helping Norma through this difficult time. She appreciated it and so did the family. Thank you also to the Coborn Cancer Center for helping Norma fight cancer for as long as was possible. She was grateful for all the caring efforts of the team.
Memorials can be given to the College of Saint Benedict Scholarship Fund in memory of Norma Dickau.
Those who knew Norma will not be surprised that she wanted no funeral instead a party that was held on January 31, 2015 at the St. Cloud Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. If there was going to be a party
