Benjamin was born August 15, 1918 in Paynesville, MN to Gustave F. and Elsie A. (Baumann) Schoenherr. On June 25, 1941 he married Gladys I. Sadlemyer in Eagle Bend, MN.
Ben served in the United States Army from 1937 to 1940. He and his wife owned and operated Midway Grocery on 2nd Ave. S., Sauk Rapids for thirteen years. They sold the grocery store in 1960 and began Schoenherr Construction. They purchased farm land from Edward Larson and built the first houses at the north end of Sauk Rapids. They wintered in Florida and Ben did remodeling while there.
Ben was a member of Bridge Community Church (formerly Sauk Rapids Christian and Missionary Alliance). He served as an Elder, board member, and chairman of the building committee for the current building. Ben laid the cement block and built the kitchen cabinets.
Ben was a long time member of Gideon’s International. He loved giving Bibles out in schools, on college campuses, and speaking in churches presenting the work of Gideon’s. He served as president of the local chapter for many years.
He was a member of the Sauk Rapids school board for several years and served on the building committee when the school on 1st Street South was built.
Ben enjoyed planting trees, gardening (roses especially), traveling, and studying the Rand McNally Atlas. He read the newspaper daily from front to back and was an avid sports fan. Ben could give you the stats on most local, college, and pro teams. He loved playing cribbage and taught his grandkids to play.
He taught his children by example, he worked hard, paid cash when he purchased something, took care of what he had and taught respect for other peoples’ things. He took his family to church regularly and gave of his time and money. Ben loved playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, greeting them by swinging them up into the air.
Survivors include, daughter and sons, Linda Fenlason of Sartell, MN; B. Dennis (Gloria) Schoenherr of Rice, MN; Thomas (Susan) Schoenherr of Bradenton, FL; sister, Lyla Pramann of Kimball, MN; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren.
