VALERIE “BETTY” E. CHELGREN, 92
St. Cloud
September 18, 1921 ~ March 6, 2014
Valerie “Betty” Elizabeth Chelgren, age 92, St. Cloud, formerly of Osseo, died Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Talahi Care Center, St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Advent Lutheran Church, Osseo. Visitation is at the church one hour before the service. Burial at Hillside Cemetery, Minneapolis. Arrangements by Benson Funeral home, St. Cloud, MN.
Betty was born September 18, 1921 in Rumson, NJ to Orville A. and Valerie M. (Brighton) Casler. She and her brother, Clinton “Peter” were raised by their mother and grandmother, Elizabeth Brighton. Betty graduated from Rumson High School where she loved playing field hockey, volleyball and other sports. Betty then got a job at Reussille’s Jewelry Store in nearby Red Bank where she met her husband-to-be, a young soldier by the name of Al Chelgren. They married on March 14, 1943 in Rumson, NJ before Al went overseas to serve in WWII. After Al came back they moved with Betty’s mother, Val, to Minnesota. After raising their family in Edina they moved to Maple Grove. They later moved to Osseo and then St. Cloud.
Volunteer work was a big part of Betty’s life. She helped young adults at Opportunity Workshop in Minneapolis for years. Betty was a librarian at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church for over 10 years and served as an assistant Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery and time at their Sand Lake cabin near Moose Lake, MN. She also enjoyed watching birds, taking walks and admiring the clouds, watching Lawrence Welk, and singing the great old hymns and songs of the 1930’s and 40’s. Betty was known for her cheerful smile and always being there to help others.
Survivors include her children, Valerie “Val” (Philip) Rogosheske of St. Cloud; Vicki (Stephen Andrewjeski) Chelgren of Minneapolis; Mark Chelgren of Minneapolis; and two grandchildren, Valerie “Allie”(Dawn Crow) Rogosheske and Abby Rogosheske.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Al, and brother Clinton “Peter” Casler.
