     Elmer Andrew Schwinghammer, age 87, Waite Park, MN, died Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
     Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial with full military honors will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Elmer was born April 3, 1926 in Albany, MN to Gregor and Theresa (Pallansch) Schwinghammer. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. Elmer married Vera Zupan on June 16, 1956 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St. Cloud, MN. She died March 20, 1999. On October 30, 1999 Elmer married Viola M. (Spanier) Backes. Elmer was an expert plumber and was a journeyman plumber with the St. Cloud Pipefitters Local 539. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Waite Park American Legion Post #428. Elmer volunteered at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salvation Army and Food Shelf. He was a avid fisherman and enjoyed watching his grandson play for the St. Louis Blues.
     Survivors include his wife, Viola Backes of Waite Park, MN; sons, Mark (Lynn Imholte) Schwinghammer of St. Cloud, MN; Mike (Chris) Schwinghammer of St. Stephen, MN; step children, Bonnie (Tim) Rowe of Proctor, MN; Steve (Karen) Backes of Blaine, MN; Joanne (Phil) Wiederhold of Crystal, MN; Jack (Peggy) Backes of Redlands, CA; Marion (Joe) Pierce of Del Rio, TX; Brian Backes of San Antonio, TX; Loren Backes of Baldwyn, MS; Susan Mayfield of Maple Grove, MN: Cheryl (Tanni) Poole of Duluth, MN; Paula (Jim) Aker of Brooklyn Park, MN; brother, Vernon (Virginia) Schwinghammer of Little Falls, MN; sister,Viola Martin of North Miami, OK; 6 grandchildren; 22 step grandchildren and 17 step great grandchildren.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Vera, and 9 brothers and sisters, including his twin sister, Alma.
