     Elmer J. Malinen, age 90, St. Cloud, MN died Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Country Manor Health Care Center, Sartell, MN.
     A service celebrating his life will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 1:30 pm at Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Rev. Ken Ferber will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial will in Hillcrest Cemetery, Cloquet, MN.
     Elmer was born August 29, 1923 in Cloquet, MN to John H. and Ida (Viinamaki) Malinen. He graduated from Cloquet High School in 1941, and received a B.S. degree from University of Minnesota-Duluth with a major in Business and Economics. He served in the US Army Air Force from 1943 - 1946, earning the rank of Sergeant and serving in the 3rd Photo Reconnaissance Squadron in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Later in St. Cloud, he was a life member of the Eastside VFW 4847.
     He married Vonna Mae Satterness on June 7, 1947 at United Protestant Church, Morgan Park, Duluth, MN. Elmer was employed by US Steel Co., Duluth, MN and Columbia Geneva Steel Co., Pittsburg, CA, then as Finance Director/Treasurer and acting City Manager for Pittsburg, CA. The family moved to St. Cloud, MN in 1969 where he was the first Finance Director for the City of St. Cloud, and then City Administrator until his retirement in December 1988. He was instrumental in much of St. Cloud’s growth and development during his time at City Hall.
     Elmer was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Osman Shrine Temple, St. Paul, MN. He was an accomplished Violinist, playing in the Jr. Symphony during High School, then in the Duluth Symphony during his College years. He also played clarinet/sax in the Cloquet City Band.
     Survivors include his wife, Vonna M. Malinen of St. Cloud, MN; sons and daughter, Martin J. (Dayna) Malinen of St. Cloud; Eric J. Malinen of St. Cloud; William J. (Lisa) Malinen of Roseville, MN; Marilyn Malinen of St. Cloud; six grandchildren, Kelly (Dennis) Kimman, Amanda (Greg) Tryggeseth, John Malinen, Rachel (David) Hultengren, Jenna Malinen, Michael Malinen and six great grandchildren, Haley Kimman, Georgia Kimman, Landon Kimman, Adam Moscatelli, Sadie Tryggeseth, Allie Tryggeseth; brother-in-law, Bill Satterness of Sartell, MN; and nieces and nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Aaron Moscatelli, and sister, Ruth Moore.
     The family would like to thank the Staffs of St. Cloud Hospital, Country Manor Health Care Center, and Home Instead Senior Care, especially Kim, and also Dr. Nardi, Dr. Matsuura, and Dr. Mitchell, for the professional care and concern they provided Elmer.
     Memorials are preferred to the Cloquet Educational Foundation to aid beginning elementary music students.
