Donald Joseph “DJ” Unzen, age 79, St. Cloud, MN, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, St. Cloud, MN, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Veterans Administration Medical Center Chapel, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel on Saturday. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Don was born March 9, 1934 in Norcross, MN to Joseph and Evelyn (Zahn) Unzen. Don graduated from Foley High School and attended college in Chicago, IL. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Barbara Czech on May 25, 1963. Don worked for Control Data Corporation for 29 years. He traveled the world trouble shooting computers and retired as an Aerospace Field Support Manager. Don was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 0530, and Waite Park American Legion Post #428. He enjoyed all sports, singing, and playing his accordion, but above all he loved spending time with his family. Don was a loving husband and father. Those who met Don appreciated his gentle and kind ways and recognized his positive attitude.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Unzen of St. Cloud, MN; son, Donald (Kathleen) Unzen II of St. Cloud, MN; daughter, Lisa (Charles) Groff of Spicer, MN; grandchildren, Kjersta and Donald III Unzen and Alex, Evan and April Groff; and sister, Janice (Roger) Zelenka of Cary, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sr. Maureen Unzen and grandparents. |
