After a courageous battle with cancer, Alice L. Kalash, age 86, St. Cloud, MN, died Monday, May 27, 2013 at St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
Alice was born April 9, 1927 in Jackson, MN to Steve and Ellen (Matasovsky) Rubis. She grew up on the family farm in Jackson and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Alice married Dwight Kalash on June 20, 1948 in Lakefield, MN, They moved to St. Cloud, MN in 1951. She worked as a registered nurse at the St. Cloud Hospital for many years and retired in 1988. Alice was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. The many friends and activities there gave her great joy. Alice also loved gardening, knitting, walking and spending time with her grandsons. After being diagnosed with macular degeneration she became active with the National Federation of the Blind. She was an inspiration to others in how she lived her life despite many challenges. Alice always had a smile and an encouraging word for everyone she met.
Survivors include daughters, Celia Carr of St. Cloud, MN; Kathryn McAlister of San Diego, CA; Diane (Joe) Dols of Prior Lake, MN; grandsons, Stephen and Eric Dols and Many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dwight, on July 21, 1999, brothers, Steve, Lawrence, Joseph and David Rubis, and sisters, Ellen Owens and Marcella Loeschen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church Youth Group or the Central Minnesota Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. |
