    DORIS M. ALLEN, 85
    St. Cloud, MN
    November 15, 1927 - January 22, 2013

Doris M. Allen, 85 year old resident of St. Cloud, MN, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, MN.
A celebration of her life will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, MN on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Steve Gartland officiating. A visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church on Friday. Funeral arrangements by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud.
Doris was born on November 15, 1927 in Appleton, Minnesota to the late V.C. & Minnie (Wehking) Christensen. When her father became ill, her parents closed their pop factory & beer distribution company in Appleton and moved to rural Litchfield, MN where they began farming. Following her graduation from Litchfield High School she worked as Deputy Register of Deeds for Meeker County. On June 10, 1948 she married Werner L. Allen. She and Werner moved from Litchfield to Alton, IA, but ultimately settled in St. Cloud, MN where she resided for the remainder of her life. Doris was a long time employee at Fandel's Home Interiors store. She also had an entrepreneurial spirit that led first to her owning & operating an employment agency, Confidential Placement Service. She and Werner later launched Allen's Heating and Air Conditioning Service Company which they owned and operated until their retirements in 1992.
Doris loved spending time with family, particularly at their cottage on Lake Minnebelle where many of her siblings also have homes or seasonal cottages. She was a do-it-yourselfer and loved seeking out projects for her and Werner to work together on. She enjoyed assembling puzzles and also playing cards - especially 500 and she could be counted on to out bid her opponents regardless of the cards she was dealt. She also enjoyed water sports, fishing and snowmobiling - which she and Werner did well into their 80's. She enjoyed traveling - periodically to Florida but also to Sweden, Germany & France. Following their retirements, she and Werner also were volunteers at St. Cloud Hospital for nearly a decade.
Doris is survived by her husband, Werner Allen of St. Cloud, MN; daughters, Kristine Sundberg of Excelsior, MN and Patti (Bob) Gartland of St. Cloud, MN; son Michael (Sandie) Allen of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren, Ross (Jenny) Sundberg of Burnsville, MN, Britta Sundberg of Chanhassen, MN, Robert Allen Gartland of St. Cloud, MN, Lacey (James) Schirmers of St. Cloud, and Jennie (Ben) Weber of St. Cloud; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Betzold, Carson & Austin Weber, Addison, Levi & Genevieve Schirmers, and Blake Sundberg; sisters, Ruth Anderson of Rochester, MN, Victoria Mealy of Cokato, MN; brothers, Darold (Edie) Christensen of Savage, MN, Tom (Carolyn) Christensen of Litchfield, MN, Viggo Christensen of Litchfield, MN; brother-in-law, Lee Pauls of Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law, Fran Christensen of Plymouth, MN, Teodes Christensen of Litchfield, MN, Janice Christensen of Litchfield, MN.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, V.C. & Minnie Christensen; brothers, Robert Christensen, James Christensen, Gerald Christensen; and sister, Mary Pauls.
Memorials are preferred to St. Cloud Hospital Hospice and Quiet Oaks Hospice House who provided exceptional care and boundless compassion to Doris and her entire family during Doris' final days and weeks on earth.
