     Margaret P. Martin, PhD, age 97, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at EagleCrest Assisted Living, Roseville, MN.
     Graveside services will be Monday, June 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM at North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
     Margaret was born April 22, 1915 in Duluth, MN to Ray & Ingga (Dahl) Martin. She was a long time resident of St. Paul. Valedictorian of 33’ St. Paul Central High, Bachelor of Science, Masters and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota. Margaret taught at Columbia University during WWII, returned to Minnesota briefly, taught medical students biostatistics at Vanderbilt University and pursued post doctorate studies at the University of Chicago in bio statistics. She also taught at Syracuse NYU and John Hopkins. Margaret returned to Minnesota in the mid sixties where she returned to the University, finishing her career on the St. Paul Campus at the US Forestry Department. An active member of the Women’s Club at the University, Margaret also volunteered for Common Cause and community support for the Hamline/Selby neighborhood..
     She was a trailblazer, fiercely independent and possessed a kind heart. Survived by cousins, Junior (Helen) Gossell of Minneapolis, MN and Alan Gossell of St. Cloud, MN, and family members, Nancy Gossell of Minneapolis, MN; Julie Gossell of Boerne, TX; Molly Swope of Austin, TX; and Dylan Swope of Eagle, CO. Her last five years were enhanced by the attention of family friend Candace McRoberts.
