Ramon “Ray” E. Skillingstad, age 87, Waite Park, MN died Sunday, April 15, 2012 at St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 20, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, St. Cloud. A memorial gathering will be Thursday, April 19, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Prayers will be said at 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Burial, with full military honors, will be at North Star Cemetery.
Ray was born April 3, 1925 in St. Paul to Marvin and Odessa (Gueffroy) Skillingstad. He was raised by Marvin and Ruth Skillingstad. Ray served in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts during WW II. Ray married Alice Schuman. After her death in 1975, he married Darlene Mickelsen. He worked as plant maintenance superintendent for Northern States Power Company from 1945 to 1981. Ray then worked for Basin Electric in Bismarck, ND. He was a member of the Becker American Legion Post 193, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and the U.S.S. Massachusetts Associates. Ray enjoyed golf and playing cards.
Survivors include sons and daughters, Dennis (Eileen) Skillingstad of St. Cloud; Lynnette (John) Taylor of Brookings, SD; Linda (Jim Keifenheim) Skillingstad of Minneapolis; Mike Skillingstad of Andover; brothers, Fr. Del Skillingstad of Spokane, Washington; Robert (Leona) Skillingstad of Sauk Rapids; sister-in-laws, Janet Skillingstad of Sartell; Lillian Skillingstad of Waite Park; ten grandchildren, Mike, Brian, and Chris Skillingstad; Patrick, Thomas and Ben Taylor; Daniel and Adam Keifenheim; and Allison and Aaron Skillingstad; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Alice and Darlene; son, David Skillingstad; grandson, Andrew Skillingstad; and two brothers, Jerome and Francis Skillingstad.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
